The Government must reconsider its decision on charging RM 50 tax per credit card on the card-holders as it will impose extra burden on the consumers.
Some consumers resort to borrowing from credit cards out of desperation and the conditions imposed are not as harsh as the Ah Longs. Some financial institutions take advantage on the situation by issuing credit cards liberally and freely. This consumer practice must be stopped to cut excessive and unproductive consumer spending and unnecessary borrowings.
The tax should be imposed on the issuing institutions to make the latter more considerate and selective in giving out credit cards. The financial institutions must be regulated and controlled in sending out credit cards. It is unfair to impose tax on the consumers who are already hard pressed for money.
Thus, as a matter of social justice, the tax must be shifted to the financial institutions.
