Gerakan Youth has urged the government to reconsider its plan to impose an Internet filter, as such a move would run counter to its earlier promise of “no internet censorship”, as well as would have far reaching implication on freedom of speech in Malaysia.

Youth chief Lim Si Pin said freedom of speech is one of the cornerstones of a functioning democratic society, any attempt to further curb freedom of speech in Malaysia, in addition to the existing laws that govern freedom of speech, must be carefully studied and considered.

“There are adequate laws including the Communications and Multimedia Act to deal with offenders in the internet,” he said.

Lim was commenting on a plan by the government to impose Internet filter to maintain racial harmony.

Lim said the government should not stop people from access to information.

“Freedom of information is also in line with the MSC Malaysia 10 Point Bill of Guarantees. Point 7 of the Bill provides that the Malaysian government promises to ensure no internet censorship.”

“We are a fast growing nation, with a matured population. The people should be allowed to read what they want to read. In the final analysis, it is the people who will decide whether what they have read are good or bad. This is also consistent with Prime Minister Najib’s statement that the era where the government knows best is over” Lim said.

Further, he also hoped the Home Ministry would review the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, in line with changing times and by consider removing the yearly license renewal requirement.
