Penang Gerakan sympathies with the 650 fishermen in Nibong Tebal who complained of depletion in fish due to pollution in the surrounding seas where the Second Penang Bridge project is on-going.
Its Wanita chief Ng Siew Lai urged the respective state executive councilor in charge of agriculture and in charge of environment to look into the problem without any delay.
Ng suggested the setting up of a task force to look into the matter as the project was important to the growth and development of Penang but at the same time, the livelihood of the fishermen must be taken care off.
Ng was commenting a police report lodged by 100 fishermen on July 16 that their earnings and livelihood had been affected because of pollution caused by works on the Second Penang Bridge project.
Ng said the task force could ascertain whether the problem was caused by the project as claimed by the fishermen, or was it due to other reasons.
She said the fishermen’s welfare should not be neglected.
