We need a consistent education policy
Press Statement by Gerakan Education and Knowledge Society Bureau Chairman, Lau Chin Hoon
Friday, 19 June 2009
Any change to the education policy should not be done on a “piecemeal” or ad hoc basis, Gerakan said.
Its head of central bureau on education and knowledge society, Lau Chin Hoon, said the Education Ministry should come out with a comprehensive and consistent education policy to ensure it has good long-term effects on the future generations.
“When it involves education, parents and students are naturally worried and concerned of what lies ahead, as they want to make better preparations,” said Lau, when commenting on the ministry’s decision to limit the number of subjects for the SPM examination to 10.
Lau, who is also Pemanis assemblyman, said it was more important to produce students who have good entrepreneurial skills, are marketable, good in problems-solving and can easily find jobs.
He said it was important to have a consistent education system as any change on an ad hoc basis would have adverse effects and implications.
The Ministry, he said, had to see to it that our SPM examination was focused on creating an innovative society and not solely examination-oriented.
