Press Statement by Penang Gerakan State Liaison Committee Chairman, Dato' Dr Teng Hock Nan
Friday, 16 January 2009
Penang Gerakan is very pleased and relieved to learn that Pahang accountant, Nik Rizman Sapian, has filed a notice to discontinue the suit that he had initiated against the Penang State Government and the Penang Municipal Council with regard to the putting up of multi-lingual road signs in Penang.
We would like to congratulate Nik Rizman Sapian for his action in withdrawing the suit. By discontinuing the suit, Nik Rizman Sapian must have realised the fact that having road signs in different languages at Penang’s heritage enclave is in line with the country’s very rich diversity in culture and language, especially in Penang.
This richness in our culture is a very valuable and unique asset of our country which all Malaysians, including our leaders should feel proud of. It is our responsibility to protect and promote this diversity. Therefore, we deem the putting up of multi-lingual road signs as a big step forward which all Malaysians should rejoice in, and come together, regardless of race, creed and religion, to ensure its successful implementation.
Henceforth, I would like to urge the state government to immediately implement the putting up of multi-lingual road signs in George Town, especially in the heritage enclave which has received UNESCO World Heritage Listing.
At the same time, Penang Gerakan is ready to assist and facilitate the process of implementation in whichever ways possible for the benefit of the country.
