Lim should lodge a police report
Press Statement by Penang Gerakan State Liaison Committee Secretary, Ong Thean Lye
Monday, 16 February 2009
We refer to reports in the Chinese newspapers today (Feb 16) quoting Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng as saying that he had heard rumours that someone wanted to murder him and his life was being threatened.
I would like to urge Lim to lodge a police report on the matter because as Penang’s chief executive, he must be careful of what he said.
“I hope Lim was not just out to create a publicity stunt or put up a political show.”
‘Now that Penang’s security is not so good, what Lim said can influence foreign investors’ confidence as well as affect tourism and the state’s economy.
Lim on Feb 2 had announced that Samsung group was reconsidering its plan to invest in Penang. He had asked the opposition parties in Penang not to jeopardise the situation. “But now Lim himself has done just that, putting sand into Penang’s rice-bowl and possibly driving investors away,” Ong said.
Ong said Penang people are already worried about their livelihood because of global recession and many people of every level such hawkers, traders and workers are being affected financially.
Ong said Penang Gerakan is also concerned with the state’s security and urged the state government and police to look into the matter.
