Gerakan Deputy President, Dato’ Chang Ko Youn today in a statement said that Gerakan will strenuously oppose any attempt to implement hudud laws and any other theocratic laws as it goes against the basic structure of our Federation and Constitution.
“We are certainly not an Islamic country but a country with a Muslim majority but with a significant non-Muslim minority. The basic structure of our constitution preserves this diversity and that is why our punitive laws are secular and applies to everyone. We cannot have different sets of laws for each section of society,” stressed Chang who is Chairman of the Bureau on the Law and Human Rights.
Chang also said that Gerakan’s political cooperation with UMNO will be untenable and will likely end if the latter wishes to implement Hudud laws in this coun+try. He said Gerakan cannot in good conscience support any attempt that contradicts the basic tenets of our Federation.
