Gerakan Youth Secretary General Dr Dominic Lau fully agrees with the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister cum Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin to enforce compulsory pass for English subjects for SPM. He said that English is an international language, if students could able to fully master the language, it will be of great use in their future career and personal development.
Dr Dominic said, “Gerakan Youth supports the execution of this new measure because English is a very important language used globally, especially in trading and businesses. Therefore, mastering English is a must for all students for the purpose of making a living.”
Dr Dominic said, however, the Education Ministry must ensure the consistency of this new policy and not simply change new policies anytime they want, this could be detrimental to students because they will find difficulty adapting to new policies all the time.
Dr Dominic also said, “Gerakan Youth is always in support of the idea of teaching Mathematics and Science subjects in English at secondary school level for the purpose of linking with tertiary education. Most reference books for Mathematics and Science subjects are in English, therefore students must fully master English in order to pick up the course easier. With this, Gerakan Youth urges the Ministry of Education to reconsider implementing teaching Mathematics & Science subjects using English at secondary school level.”
Dr Dominic stated that, before implementing this policy, the Ministry of Education has to ensure that the country has sufficient teachers to meet this new policy of teaching the new syllabus in English and there has to be continuous assessment on the existing measures for the purpose of improvement, if not the new policy would be very unfair to the students.
Dr Dominic urges the Ministry of Education to implement this policy soonest possible in order to help students in mastering English.
