Perak must go back to the People
Press Statement by Gerakan National Youth Deputy Chief, Oh Tong Keong
Monday, 11 May 2009
Gerakan Youth Deputy Chief, Oh Tong Keong today in a statement urged Perak Barisan Nasional to respect the decision made by the High Court declaring Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin the rightful Menteri Besar of Perak.
“The best course of action is for Datuk Seri Nizar and Datuk Seri Zambry to advise the Sultan of Perak to dissolve the State Assembly and pave the way for new elections so the people of Perak have the final say on who should lead them,” Oh said.
Oh also advised Perak Barisan, not to apply for a stay of execution pending an appeal because the High Court had declared that the Stephen Kalong Ningkan decision of 1966 is the right course of action to follow in removing a Menteri Besar or Chief Minister, and it must be via a vote of no confidence in the State Assembly.
“While it is the legal right of an individual to appeal a decision made by a court of law, I feel that prolonging this matter will create the impression that the Barisan Nasional is hungry for power, which in truth is not correct, but the perception needs to be redressed and one good way is by allowing the people to the final judge of this matter,” Oh advised.
Oh also called on all parties to remain calm and do not make any comments that will further aggravate the situation. He was of the view that if fresh elections are held, it could pave the way for a constructive and renewed partnership between the people and Barisan Nasional as the perception would be that the BN is finally listening to the people.
