Wanita Gerakan is glad that sex education will soon be introduced in the country’s mainstream education system, saying it will inculcate a healthy lifestyle as well as help reduce sexual violence.

Wanita Gerakan deputy chief Ng Siew Lai said today that children should know more about sex as lacking knowledge on the subject had resulted in social problems.

However, she reiterated that the implementation should be done in different phases in secondary schools as well as in primary schools.

“For instance, in primary school, the pupils should be taught about their biological differences and how to protect themselves from sexual advances while in secondary school, pupils should be taught the consequences and effects about immorality,” she said.

Ng said teaching respectful relationships and sex education at schools, even at kindergardens level, would help reduce, if not eliminate, sexual violence.

She said sex education in primary school was equally important as boys and girls needed to know their biological differences.

“Besides teachers, parents also have an important role to see to it that their children have the right knowledge on sex,” she said, adding that moral should be emphasized.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said yesterday that a technical committee comprising officials of his ministry and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry would meet to discuss the relevant issues.
