Wanita Gerakan welcomes the government’s decision to give teachers and headmasters cash incentives for high performances, but believe more needs to be done to create a better and more conducive school environment for teachers to discharge their primary duty, that is to educate our future generations.

Wanita Gerakan deputy chief Ng Siew Lai said the government had set the right frame for headmasters and teachers to work harder to enhance quality and standard of students and schools.

“Though monetary incentive is important to acknowledge the contributions and role of educators towards shaping a better education system in the country, we are of the view that other aspects are equally important like making schools more friendly to teachers who have children,” she said in a statement.

Ng said their increasing workload in this modern time should commensurate with better deals, rewards and incentives, hence government should serious consider proving nursery in schools to lighten the burden of female teachers with children.

“We must not only acknowledge the sacrifice and exemplary efforts of teachers in giving their best to impart knowledge to the younger generation, but also take concrete steps to assist them to perform their duty effectively and efficiently” she said.

“The proposals submitted by the special committee set up to look into teachers complaints must be taken seriously and implemented soonest possible, after all the primary role of teachers is to educate and not to do endless paper works,” reminded Ng.

Ng also stressed the need for a good mechanism for the incentives to work to ensure that the works and achievements of headmasters and teachers are fairly judged.

Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the “new deal” on Sunday for teachers, of between RM900 and RM7, 500, in yearly incentives for excellent performance.

Muhyiddin had said the incentives were several measures adopted from this year to inject “enthusiasm” among teachers to work harder in improving the standard of the schools and quality of students nationwide.
