While the health authorities are focusing their energy to tackle the H1N1 problems, another health problem has surfaced – the spread of chikungunya disease.
Penang Gerakan treasurer Ng Fook On said although the spread of chikungunya had not reached an alarming state, the authorities and the people should pay special attention on the disease.
According to statistics given by Penang Health Department, there were 67 cases in the state for the first four months of this year.
Ng said in view of the large number of chikungunya cases in Penang, there should be a coordinated effort to tackle the problem.
He urged the state government to keep the public informed of the situation so as avoid causing unnecessary panic and worry.
“While the local councils must take positive measures to clean up dirty places, the people should give their cooperation by making sure their compounds, drains and surrounding areas are clean and free of mosquito breeding grounds,” Ng said.
