Penang Gerakan has questioned the sudden decision of the state government to fence up a front portion of Dewan Sri Pinang’s compound in George Town, ostensibly to protect the flowers there.
Penang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong said the previous Barisan Nasional state government had never interfered with activities organized by non-government organizations (NGOs) at the compound to voice disagreement and unhappiness over government policies and happenings.
“But now with the place fenced up, the people won’t be able to use the place freely. Is the state government putting up a reverse gear for democracy?” said Oh in a statement.
Oh said previously the place had been used as a public platform by non-government organizations (NGOs), politicians, civil societies and concerned groups.
He said when Pakatan Rakyat was in the opposition in the state, they shouted the voice of democracy at every available opportunity but now “when they rule the state, they shut the door of democracy.”
Yesterday, Suaram, an NGO, said they had organized six anti-ISA activities in 2008 and 2009 at the place. These activities were also attended by PR state assemblymen.
Suaram also suggested that a speaker’s corner should be set up at Dewan Sri Pinang for the people to freely voice their views and opinions.
