Penang Gerakan chief Dato’ Dr Teng Hock Nan and Penang Barisan Nasional chief Teng Chang Yeow have urged Penangites to give Penang Gerakan, a component party of the Barisan Nasional, seats in the Penang State Legislative Assembly and at the Dewan Rakyat, in order for the party to play a more effective role in serving the people.
Both Dr Teng and Chang Yeow said alternatively, if Penangites felt that the Barisan Nasional should form the next Penang state government, “we are ready.”
“We are prepared. We hope to have a breakthrough.”
Dr Teng and Chang Yeow said it is up to the people to make the decision when the next general election is held.
Speaking at the Penang Gerakan headquarters during a two-hour briefing with its election machinery, Dr Teng said Penang Gerakan is ready to face the general election, in terms of preparation, working with the people and understanding the issues involved.
He said Gerakan leaders were not involved in any scandal when Gerakan led the previous Barisan Nasional state administration.
“If the people want us as government, we are ready; if the people want us as opposition, please give us some strength, to check and balance,” he said.
Dr Teng said it was important that the party’s grassroots leaders and members forge closer ties with their counterparts from other BN component parties and BN friendly parties to consolidate the coalition’s position in the state.
He said all the party coordinators have been working hard and adopting strategies suitable to local conditions.
Chang Yeow, who is also Gerakan secretary-general, said Gerakan is leading the Penang Barisan Nasional in the battle and “we have to deliver certain seats for the Barisan Nasional.”
“We have to oil our machinery and move on effectively and cohesively,” Chang Yeow added.
Chang Yeow also said that Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon had submitted the candidate list to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also the Barisan chairman.
“The list of Gerakan candidates is already with the PM. As far as Penang Gerakan is concerned, we are ready to do battle even if the general election is tomorrow,” he added.
