Thousands of road users are unhappy of being stuck in traffic jam almost daily during peak hours at the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway’s roundabout in Seberang Prai.

The bottleneck often causes the jam to stretch for 10km. Sometimes the jam can stretch all the way across the Penang Bridge to Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu on Penang island.

They urge the authorities concerned, including the federal and state governments, to seriously look into the matter and rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Barisan Nasional coordinator for Machang Bubuk Ooi Suan Ho, who uses the road daily, said the situation is made worst during rush hours, as the traffic flow goes all the way from the Penang Bridge to Jelutong on the island.

Ooi, who is also Penang Gerakan Youth assistant secretary, claimed the congestion would discourage investors and people from investing or buying property on the mainland, especially in Batu Kawan.

“I am not an expert in traffic management and dispersal, however the authorities concerned should engage an expert to deal with the problem quickly,” Ooi said a BN press conference on Monday at the Penang Gerakan Headquarters.

Ooi said the Penang state government is terribly inefficient in solving the problem.

He suggested that the traffic flow at the roundabout be re-routed and closing the turning exit points at the roundabout during peak hours to ease the traffic flow.

For a long term measure, he suggested that the Malaysian Highway Authority should consider building alternative routes linking the expressway to other roads.
