Gerakan has welcomed the government’s decision to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the Teoh Beng Hock case, saying “it is refreshing and in line with the wishes of the people that the truth must prevail.”
Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn said members of the commission are professionals, reputable and have good records and they will carry out their duties diligently.
“Gerakan has persistently made its stand that the truth relating to Teoh’s death must be established within the means and capabilities of available resources. We are glad that PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has also kept his promise that the government also wants to find out the real truth of Teoh’s death,” said Chang in a statement.
Chang, who is also Gerakan’s chairman of human rights and legal bureau, said the government had responded well to the wishes of the public to set up an RCI, following the “Open-Verdict” by the Coroner’s Court.
“Thus, we now hope that all quarters including the political divide will stop politicizing Teoh’s case and let the RCI carry out its job professionally and impartially.
On Jan 5, Chang had urged the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry to determine the cause of death of Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor Executive Councilor.
Chang said the open verdict delivered by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas would not allay the concerns of Teoh’s family and Malaysians at large.
“I believe a Royal Commission of Inquiry that is properly constituted and comprised of eminent personalities will hopefully be able to give us a clearer picture and reach an acceptable conclusion on the circumstances surrounding his death,” Chang added.
On Wednesday, Najib said the commission would comprise three judges and two medical consultants, with Federal Court judge Tan Sri James Foong Cheng Yuen as chair.
Besides, looking into the cause of Teoh’s death, the panel will also into any impropriety by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission during Teoh’s questioning in relation to its standing orders and practices. It will recommend the appropriate action where necessary.
