Gerakan National Deputy President, Dato’ Chang Ko Youn today in a statement called on the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry to determine the cause of the death of political aide to a Selangor Executive Councilor, Teoh Beng Hock. He said the open verdict delivered by coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas will not to allay the concerns of Teoh’s family and Malaysians at-large.

“We owe it to Teoh’s family and the public to get to bottom of what happened to Beng Hock. We cannot leave it hanging and the open verdict does just that. While I understand the constraints the coroner faced, I believe a Royal Commission of Inquiry that is properly constituted and comprised of eminent personalities will hopefully be able to give us a clearer picture and reach an acceptable conclusion on the circumstances surrounding his death,” said Chang who is also Chairman of the Legal and Human Rights Bureau.

Chang added that certain finding of the coroner, namely ruling out suicide and raising doubts that Teoh could have exited unaided from the window on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam before falling to his death. He said the government is now facing the court of public opinion and we have to ensure justice is done and seen to be done in this case.
