Disgusted with Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s threat to the Chinese community, Gerakan vice president Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan wants the government to punish Ibrahim and charge him under the Sedition Act.

Dr Teng said it has been too often that Ibrahim has been making racial statements that can cause “tension, uneasiness and stress” amongst the people.

“It is appropriate that the government should immediately take steps, especially during this political challenging time, to stop any individual or organization from making racist statements that stoke tension and affect the peace and harmony of the nation,” said Dr Teng, who is also Penang Gerakan chief, in a statement.

Dr Teng said Gerakan lauded Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for coming out boldly and in no uncertain terms to protest against Ibrahim’s racist remarks.

“As Barisan Nasional Youth chief and as Umno Youth chief, Khairy represents the younger generation who is against any form of extremism. The younger generation of the BN and Umno is moving towards the right track,” Dr Teng added.

Dr Teng urged all Malaysians to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s approach of moderation as the way forward and for the nation and the people to continue to progress.

In this respect, Dr Teng said, the government should take stern action against irresponsible leaders and “nip the problem in the bud” before it is too late.

Ibrahim, who recently announced that Perkasa would hold a demonstration to counter the planned Berish 2.0 street rally on July 9, had called on the Chinese to stock up on food “as anything can happen”.

In response, Khairy urged the authorities to take action against Ibrahim for making the threat.

“It is a racist and seditious statement that is dangerous. Action should be taken against him as his statement is a clear threat,” Khairy said at Parliament lobby in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
