Poor performance by state government, Gerakan

Penang Gerakan on Thursday chided the DAP-led state government for poor performance and “bad delivery” to the people of Penang.

Its publicity, information and communication bureau chief Dr Thor Teong Gee said the state government did not deserve to have the CAT slogan (competency, accountability and transparency).

He said the state government had failed miserably in its performance in many aspects.

At a press conference held at the Penang Gerakan headquarters in Jalan Macalister, Penang Gerakan Legal and Human Rights Bureau chief Baljit Singh listed five important matters that could be called a “failure.”

They are the sPice project at PISA in Relau, the “Kancil” carpark for Penang Hill, Penang “Paid” Wifi, Illegal Telco Towers, and traffic congestion in the state.

On the sPice project, which is be implemented soon, Dr Thor said it was unacceptable for the state government and the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) to allow the developer to build 450 LMC units in 20 years.

“Further, RM50 million is to be provided by MPPP without proper or comprehensive studies. The concession agreement with the developer was also signed by MPPP without the knowledge of municipal councilors,” said Dr Thor.

Referring to the “Kancil” carpark, Baljit said the state government could not even build a simple car park for people wanting to go to Penang Hill. “They said they would investigate the matter but the investigation has not been completed after months.”

As to the Penang “Paid Wifi”, he said the state government had said it was free but “the people ended up having to pay for the service.”

Baljit said the state government had failed to resolve the illegal Telco towers problem and had failed to dismantle them as promised. “Until today, the state government has been unable to provide a list of approved Telco towers, as requested by an NGO.”

He said the traffic congestion in the state had not improved over the past three years as the state government did not have any tangible solution. “They have not built any roads or flyovers. Traffic flow has not been restructured to ease congestions and alleviate hardships faced by motorists.”
