Penang Gerakan disappointed with demonstartion held in front of DUN

Penang Gerakan has expressed its disappointment at the demonstration by a few groups of people during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here last Tuesday (Nov 2).

Gerakan’s Coordinator for Sungai Pinang Constituency Dr Thor Teong Gee said the public must respect the dignity of the DUN and it should be a peaceful place.

“We are very disappointed with the group of people who aired their dissatisfaction in the wrong ways which in front of the state assembly,” he told reporters here Saturday (Nov 6).

Dr Thor said the people who supported the demonstration also creating havoc, shouted and portray a violence behavior in front of DUN.

“I know everyone has their right to voice their dissatisfaction but we should do it through a proper channel and it is important to do it according to the law and through a civilise way,” he said.

However, Dr Thor also suggested that among the good ways for the public to voice out their dissatisfaction is to go through their elected Assemblyman in their constituency.

“Demonstration can be avoided if the people can make good use of their elected assemblyman or Member of Parliament in their constituency to convey their messages to the authority,” he said.

As for the political party who involved in the demonstration, Dr Thor said being political party, they have to be responsible and have the obligation to show a very mature and high quality ways to pursue what ever issue.

“I really do not understand why the Pemuda Umno was involve in the demonstration as Umno have 11 elected state assemblymen to represent the people in the DUN and yet they choose to convey their message through demonstration,” he said.

He said Gerakan hoped that such incident would not repeat again as this was not the first time such demonstration after about 100 people mostly Kampung Buah Pala residents demonstrated there last year.

“We should respect the dignity of DUN and we hoped what happen last week would serve as a lesson to all parties and groups,” he said.

Last Tuesday, more than 100 people, mostly residents of Genting, Balik Pulau including the state Pemuda Umno, gathered outside of the state assembly to protest on the land acquisition issue and the returning of RM100 contribution under the Senior Citizen Appreciation programme.

Their actions drew the attention of the public and their act of disrupting traffic led to traffic congestion on Light Street and Padang Kota Lama for over an hour.
