Gerakan Wanita Deputy Chief Datuk Ng Siew Lai is shocked by the news that a women was nearly raped in the express bus, she urges all lady passengers to be practice more precaution to protect their own safety.

Datuk Ng said, “Now that the society is very unsafe, everyone needs to increase the awareness of own safety, especially single woman when using public transportations, including bus, taxi & lrt train. Ladies traveling alone should be highly alert of the surrounding and know how to protect themselves whenever they are faced with any dangerous situation to avoid from being sexually assaulted or harmed.”

Datuk Ng said, “On a positive note, this incident is actually a very good lesson for all of us to learn. Before the attempted rape happened, the bus driver chased two male passengers from the bus yet it did not catch the attention of the victim and the victim did not find any peculiarity in the act of the bus driver hence continued to stay in the bus, which is what nearly lead to her being raped. The fact is, the respective lady passenger should have disembarked the bus together with the two male passengers immediately and not remaining in the bus alone.”

Datuk Ng who is also the Penang Gerakan Wanita Chief said, “There had been quite a number of cases where lady passengers were sexually assaulted by bus drivers. With this, the bus operators should learn the lesson from these incidences and be more cautious when hiring bus drivers, it would be crucial to study the background of the bus driver applicants before hiring them so that such issue will not happen again.”

Datuk Ng urges all women to try to avoid traveling alone on public transportations and bring along any self defense devices to rapist for emergency use.
