Gerakan has come out to defend the Bar Council’s “MyConstitution” campaign to make the articles of the constitution easier for the public to understand, saying it is a noble effort to promote constitutionalism and rule of law in Malaysia.
Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn said today that the council’s MyConstitution” campaign was good public education intitiative and “should not be taken out of context” by some quarters as being seditious.
“Not many people fully understand the meaning, wording and interpretation of the Federal Constitution, the foundation of nationhood of this country. So it is only right on the Bar council’s part to try to summarise and provide simpler and clearer explanations,” said Chang, who is also the party’s bureau chief on human rights and law.
He said having an informed and educated people was of paramount importance for the nation to progress further.
Chang was commenting on a police report lodged on Monday by the 1Malaysia Youth Graduates Club in Serdang, calling for action to be taken against the campaigners for allegedly promoting the changing of provisions in the Constitution, especially those touching on the special position of Malays and Islam.
Chang recalled that senior members of each arm of government have graced the campaign since it took off on November 13 last year, notably Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia; Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum; and Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of national unity and performance management.
