Gerakan Youth Secretary General Dr. Dominic Lau said that Gerakan Youth strongly disagrees with the cabinet decision today to instruct the Ministry of Higher Education to appeal the ruling by the Court of Appeal that adjudicated Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA 1971) is unconstitutional. He said that the decision by the Court of Appeal carries legal weight is a fact that should not be questioned.
“Cabinet claimed that the decision by the Court of Appeal is an intervention to the legislation process of parliament, I think that this problem is not important at the mean time, the main point is UUCA 1971 is already outdated, it does not apply to the present time, moreover it is not wanted by the people. Hasty decision by the government will only bring backlash and negative effect. The government should listen to the people’s will and not let UUCA 1971 to keep on suppressing the freedom to join politics for the undergraduates,” said Dr. Dominic Lau.By putting the future of the people and undergraduates as the top priority, Dr. Dominic Lau urges the cabinet to think twice and cancel the appeal.
