Gerakan Wanita Deputy Chief Datuk Ng Siew Lai today condemned and criticized the idea of setting sex as the foundation of marriage as absurd when referring to the statement made by the Obedient Wife Club Vice President Rohaya Mohamad that wifes should fulfill the husbands’ sexual needs in order to ensure the fidelity of the husband. Datuk Ng is in the opinion that there are many other factors to sustain a happy marriage apart from sex, such as mutual respect, mutual understanding as well as the combine effort between the couple to sustain the family.

Datuk Ng finds that the Obedient Wife Club organization is absurd, not only the founding of the organization humiliates women, it also degrades the status of women in the society and family, what’s even shocking is that the organization was set up by women which not only self disgracing but is also widely unpopular among in the society that upholds equality of both genders.

Datuk Ng Siew Lai who is also the of Penang Gerakan Wanita Chief feels that the distorted statement that wife should provide better service than a prostitute to please the husband has severely degrade women. Datuk Ng said, “A happy marriage depends on the effort of the husband and wife to sustain the relationship, not treating women as sex slave. The wife will downgrade to the level of a slave to the husband if a wife only obeys the husband without any personal viewpoint. Both husband and wife should have mutual respect and understanding as well as take care of each other to have a happy marriage life.”

Datuk Ng also pointed out that the objective of the Obedient Wife Club is totally absurd and nonsensical because the founding of the club has defeated the effort to strive for gender equality of various women associations. Datuk Ng also said, “the club was initiated by a group of Muslim women, their mindset are extremely conservative to the extend that it is totally against the gender equality standpoint. In the generation today, men and women are equal, the wife is not expected nor should she accept every request regardless of the reasonableness of the request from the husband, including sexual aspect of marriage life.

Datuk Ng feels that sex is not the only foundation of a happy marriage life, instead, a healthy and positive communication is the more important factor of a harmonious family. The “tao” of a husband and wife relationship is to have mutual understanding and mutual respect. For sure, the wife should play her role well, yet whenever she is faced with an unreasonable treatment such as being abused by the husband, she has all the right to defend herself and fight to the end.

Last but not least, Datuk Ng Siew Lai sternly condemns the founding of such ridiculous and meaningless organization, she also urge all women associations and the public to voice out their criticism towards such organization.
