From the Past to Present to Future, Starting Anew… (Part 1)

As this is my first article for this website and for Gerakan, I feel that it would be appropriate if I took this opportunity to give you ‘the’ reader a first hand guide of my experience in a political party, I hope this will prepare you, if you have had any inclinations of joining a political party, what to expect when you become a member. I must state at the outset and be honest with you, in that from conversations with many of my friends who are members of other political parties, that the scenario and experience are not very different from one party to another.
When I first made the decision to join a political party in the Barisan Nasional, after having been associated with the alternative in Malaysia for the last 18 years, I shopped around for a party whose ideology I could most identify with. I say ‘shop’ because that is what political parties do, they sell an ideology, a belief, A HOPE.
Ever since I was a little boy, I have been fortunate to have to never rely on my ethnicity for anything, and neither have I had any adverse accident with any form of ethnic intolerance that was beyond the norm, as in what is routine in any country anywhere in the world.
I grew up in different environments having grown up an orphan, I moved from one family to another with relative ease, both Chinese and Indian, some of my cousins having married outside their racial boundaries. I was fortunate to never have had to be pressured into any particular ethnic makeup. Having never had to exhibit a preference for any particular race, religion or language I grew up a child of the universe so to speak. I believe in the universality of the person. And I was fiercely proud to be Malaysian, the only IDENTITY that really made any sense to me.
What is it about Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia that attracted me? The paragraph below sums up its ideology taken from its official website.
“Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia, Parti Gerakan for short, has since its founding in 1968, been committed to the pursuit of a non-ethnic approach as the basis of its political struggle, be it in politics, economics, education and culture. Parti Gerakan has never relented, and will never relent, in our struggle for a truly Malaysian non-racial approach towards the attainment of a united, secular and socially just Malaysia, though the forms and modes of struggle can vary according to changing circumstances. This was the line of our party’s founding fathers. It remains our line to-day. It will be our line tomorrow. This consistency and steadfastness in our party’s commitment to the non-ethnic approach are premised on the belief that there is a large section of our society whose political consciousness is Malaysian, and want political representation as Malaysians”.
In short, I was attracted to it because there are no restrictions institutionalized in its ideology on any Malaysian who wants to be part of its struggle. It is a multi-racial party for a multiracial Malaysia. Of course I have noticed that in reality the party is by and large mono-ethnic and the party leadership takes great pains to say that this is not really of much consequence, as what is more important is that the party takes a non-racial approach in all its positions and struggles.
As my initial article submitted was long, I have divided it into two parts. This is just Part 1 of my article, next in Part 2, I will talk about Syed Hussien. Why do I mention Syed Hussien, it is because Gentlemen like him are not known to compromise the need to be multiracial in both form and substance. I will also elaborate on my experiences in the party and the challenges faced.

Dear Stephen,
You are amongst ‘those people who know’ ...
“Among His signs are the creation of Heaven and Earth, as well as the diversity in your tongues and colors. In that are signs for those who know” Quran 30:22

Stephen,
great introduction.
It would be good for gerakan members to know more about their founding members such as Syed Hussein.
So, I shall await patiently for your 2nd chapter.

Stephen,
A lot has been said by mainstream leaders on ethnicity and the issue of adequate/just representation…
An excerpt of PGRM’s “objective”...which reads..“To strive for an egalitarian Malaysian Society based on humanitarian and democratic principles and to ensure social and economic justice by:..”
http://www.gerakan.org.my/tt-organisation.htm
Just take a look at the PGRM’s organisation…! only three “non-Chinese”...this is what PGRM has achieved since 1968!!! Bravo…bravo..!!
Looks like no lessons were learnt from the last GE nor the by-elections…not to mention party elections..
At a glance..it looks like MCA 2…
Stephen…perhaps…had you been Stephen Chi Na Man…it could have been a different story..!?
Encourage you to speak your hearth in Part 2
God bless

stephen,
I can understand why you mention about party gerakan ideology and promote it. Infact, there is not much different for party DAP and Keadilan as well which are also multiracial and respect equality.
The problem is, this party although hv very good ideology since it founded, but it was long lost after grabbing power under BN/UMNO umbrella. After Tun Dr.Lim era, many(not all) of their leaders hv forgotten their origin ideology and principle. What they join gerakan is for their own personal interest(kangtau) like position in galvernment agencies, state and federal level and also lucative galvernment projects. They hv forgotten to fight for the people/rakyat as a whole, and kow-tow (bow head) or even bully by their big brother UMNO inorder to keep or stay in their positions. This is what the current party leader do best. Thats why poeple/rakyat hv voted out gerakan in the last General Elections after so many years cheated by them.
I sincerely hope your sacred heart on this party ideology will not change not matter what circumstances. Many leader like you also hv the same sacred heart when joining a political party but along the way they changed and becomes corrupt & rotten after obtain power, wealth and status given by the rakyat. Always keep this in mind before you sleep.
Keep writing. Penangites will be watching you…

Good points Mr. Stephen.
Sadly but true, Gerakan today does not seem stand on its ideology. I wonder is it the leaders or the members that makes Gerakan does not look like a multiracial party at all.
Someone in Gerakan PLEASE wake up. Perhaps, maybe you Stephen can be the one to stand up and make a change. Hopefully, Gerakan will rise again as a great multiracial parti for all Malaysians.

You wrote “Of course I have noticed that in reality the party is by and large mono-ethnic and the party leadership takes great pains to say that this is not really of much consequence,..”
Your observation is spot on so be careful; thats all. Politics is a dirty game and you are only useful as long as the party needs you. where do you see yourself in the party 5 years from now?

Stephen…
For PGRM to survive…significant changes are required within…besides this…we must be known (as was long before) as the party that speaks for the RAKYAT (1Malaysia) and not constrained by anyone (party leaders..BN..UMNO..etc…)
We still luv PGRM with all our heart as we believe in its ideology…This party does not belong to the selfish individuals within… the party belongs to its members…it belongs to u and me and our brothers & sisters who are part of this big family (irrespective of race, creed, religion). We cannot let it rot because of these individual… I would urge the rest to speak-up…to stand on our feet…hold hands and have the resilience to speak our minds…hopefully..there will be a better tomorrow…
Speak your mind…you are not alone…

Stephen…
The introduction of KPIs within PGRM is also long overdue..!!!
Wonder how rapidly will it get introduced in our party…the so called B*** D*** minister is very busy establishing that for others…
Lets not wait for it to come our way. KPIs will be good for the party…take the lead…will assist you in every way… We will then get to see the capabilities within PGRM…

IMHO PGRM has not been able to stand up and defend the Malaysians which it claims to represent - a party or a person which can call a spade a spade will be respected by all Malaysians eg Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, Datuk Shahrir Samad, Karpal Singh, Tok Guru etc
IMHO Stephen is an wasting his time by being in PGRM which is a pale shadow of the party he joined many many years ago.
Just be partyless and support whoever or whichever party that stands for truth and justice irrespective of race, creed and colour.
