Gerakan will not boycott, if the state government can make local election happen within the existing legal framework. “Gerakan already set up a special task force to look into local government elections,” said Sdra. Dr. Chin Fook Weng, who is heading the task force, present at the forum ‘Where is the Local Democracy Ahead?’ on 5th August 2010.

The forum jointly organized by Penang Gerakan Legal and Human Rights Bureau and Teh Tarik Forum Bureau invited two former MPPP local councils to speak in the forum.

Sdra. Dr. Thor Teong Gee quoted Local Agenda 21 when speaking about public participation in local developments.

The state government is instructing the local authorities, such as in the case of Penang International Convention Centre (PICC), Tiger Park, as well as the event ‘Kings of Tennis’. “The autonomy of local authorities is neglected,” said Sdra. Mark Ooi.

Sdra. Dr. Chin Fook Weng also commented the Pakatan Rakyat lead Penang state government promised to reinstate local government election and is only giving excuses for not able to carry out their promises.
