Penang Gerakan state chairman, Dr Teng Hock Nan believes all political leaders should embrace Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu’s spirit as a committed and resilient politician, whose ideology is to build a Malaysia free from racial biased politics.

Dr Teng said that during his visit to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu’s wake at Dewan Sri Pinang on Nov 27.

“I have a very special relationship with Tun Lim as he roped me into Gerakan and was my mentor in the political scene since the 1970’s” he said.

“I still remember vividly Tun Lim’s struggle since his MCA days. For the cause of multi racialism, Tun left MCA, and work from scratch to form UDP and then Gerakan as a multiracial party” he added.

Dr Teng also said “multiracialism is the way forward for our country. It is now time for new Gerakan leaders to embrace the spirit of Tun Lim, to renaissance again, to raise again in the future political arena.”

Dr Teng also remembers well Tun Lim’s defeat to Lim Kit Siang at the height of Tun’s political career.

“I remember it was also here in Dewan Sri Pinang. As a politician he did very well, Tun completed most of his industrialization project, infrastructure project and the economy was very good. Yet he was defeated” he said.

“Tun was gentleman enough to come to Dewan Sri Pinang to congratulate the winner, and when he left he was booed by the opposition members” he said.

Dr Teng said he had visited Tun Lim in Penang Hospital a few times where Tun was treated following a stroke.

Dr Teng was on leave in overseas until the 1st of December, but he came back early to pay his final respect to Tun Lim, as well as give his support to Tun’s grieving family.
