Appreciate your life and don’t gamble it away

Recently, there have been lots of suicide cases in our country. Wanita Gerakan urges all sectors, including government, civil society organizations, NGOs, religious organizations and others, to pay close attention to this issue. All of us should co-operate in putting effort to guide the person who has the tendency to commit suicide back to the right path and correct their negative thinking.

Wanita Gerakan deputy chief Ng Siew Lai said life is precious, people is only born once, and suicide will only leave an indelible pain and grief to the family and friends. Therefore, we should appreciate our life and live to the best. May be life does not go on as intended, however, as long as can live to the fullest, it is already a responsible attitude to life.

“The media should not blow the tragic incidents out of proportion; instead, they should interview more specialists to teach people how to overcome their negative thinking, and provide opportunities and give good coverage to the NGOs and counselling centres to guide and help those needed help. Besides that, we should always care of our family and friends, pay attention to their mood and behaviour, communicate more with them, listen to their problems, and guide those with negative thinking back to the right path.”

Ng, who is also Penang Gerakan Wanita chief, said most of the time, people commit suicide on an impulse. Before a person committing suicide, symptoms or signs usually can be found. Everyone, including family, friends, colleagues, elders, and so on should concern of the teenagers and adults, who are under pressure, help them to relieve stress, to avoid them from committing suicide.

Ng suggested that the Government to provide allocations to NGOs and counselling centres so that they can have sufficient funds to organise more activities to help those who have suicidal tendencies and save their lives. In addition, the religious organizations also have important roles to guide those who have mental sicknesses to the correct path.

Ng hopes that the society can pay attention to this issue and urged the relevant units to establish sound assistance mechanism, so can reduce the suicide rate which causes the lost of talent in our country.
